Ile razy zdarzało Ci się słyszeć, kiedy ktoś rozpoczynał przemówienie słowami „ladies and gentlemen”? Całkiem sporo, prawda? A ile razy, żeby ktoś rozpoczynał zwrotem „gentlemen and ladies”? Pewnie ani razu ;)
A dlaczego? W języku angielskim istnieją wyrażenia, które nazywamy “binomials”, czylo złożone z dwóch słów połączonych spójnikiem (and/or). Kolejność słów w tych wyrażeniach jest stała i zawsze używa się ich w przyjętej formie.
Na pewno znasz już niektóre z nich i nawet z nich korzystasz. Na przykład rock and roll, fish and chips, now or never. Te przykłady są znane i tłumaczymy je dosłownie. Jednak nie wszystkie wyrażenia z grupy “binomials” są takie proste – niektóre znaczą zupełnie coś innego niż można by przypuszczać i wtedy trzeba je po prostu zapamiętać.
